Review: Innocent Luna Game

                                                     Download Link

First of all, happy Halloween/Nightmare Night everypony!
If you follow this site, I’m sure you at least know of the Luna games.  For those of you living under a rock, this series of creepypasta platform titles has become a viral sensation for its nightmare-inducing scares.  Much like Luna herself in the recent episode Luna Eclipsed, fan developer Dialgabrite wanted to prove that a good game featuring Luna doesn’t have to be terrifying with his project Innocent Luna Game.  Was he able to do it?  Let’s find out after the break.

The game’s plot makes it clear from the start that this is a lighthearted romp.  As Luna, you’re thrust into different worlds where you must aid a diverse selection of characters, from assisting Whale Wars’ Paul Watson in taking down Japanese hunters to knocking sense into rogue Pokemon and Digimon bent on dominating Equestria.  The game is divided into numerous chapters, each consisting of a Sonic-esque act and a boss battle.
To advance, you jump around as in any typical platformer, attacking enemies with lunar bolts and collecting… Yu-Gi-Oh cards?  Sure, let’s go with that.  While these three things(collectibles, precise jumps, and attacks) are all crucial parts of the platforming experience that the developer has down, there are some issues to be found in this aspect.  First of all, your weapon only shoots in one direction: forward and diagonally down.  It would have been a lot simpler and more efficient if these projectiles had gone just straight forward a la Mega Man.  And there are no power ups or cumulative upgrades that allow you to make it stronger or change its direction.  Because of this, you must resort to jumping in order to successfully damage most enemies.

                                                           We're whalers on the moon...
And that’s where the second problem comes in.  Unlike games such as Super Mario Bros. where the height of your jump is affected by how long you press down its respective button, Luna’s rather high jump goes the same height regardless.  This means that you’ll be moon jumping(no pun intended) everywhere you go, which can be irritating when attempting to make some jumps or avoiding enemy fire.  This is not the worst thing in the world, but it could definitely use improvement.
Finally, the items you collect are practically worthless, as you have unlimited lives.  That said, this as well as the save feature are useful considering the lengthiness of this adventure.  It took me a good few hours to complete the game- something I can’t say for any other pony game I’ve played yet.  Sometimes the formula is changed up a bit, but not always for the better.  There are a few scrolling levels, a rail shooter level, and levels in which you transform into another character.  While I thought that last one sounded really cool, these other characters(Nightmare Moon and Princess Celestia, to be specific) do nothing unique.  Their attacks have the same size, power, and function as Luna’s, not to mention they are slower than the protagonist.  This means the only thing that stands out about the two is a larger hurtbox- something especially noticeable in the battle against Leomon.  You must fight the boss while a barrage of meteors come at you from the sky, with your only defense being a single platform, which Celestia can barely fit under.  If Leomon is under the platform, receiving damage is practically inescapable.
This is very hit or miss in the presentation department.  On the plus side, worlds are colorful and Luna is animated very nicely.  The music selection is fun and eclectic, ranging from MLP remixes to J-Rock.  However, none of these assets are original.  The enemies are almost entirely static images, and all the pony sprites are ripped from that batch that everypony and their mother use (some are even in our current banner).  That said, it’s clear that the developer was very ambitious and had all the right intentions.
As such, I really want to go easy on this game.  I love a good platformer, and the fandom has sorely been lacking a traditional platformer of a sizeable length.  Unfortunately, it has a number of shortcomings I can’t ignore.  With that, I’ll give this game a:

  1. hi, thank you! I was a little worried about being reviewed cause like I said Im sensitive, but you really did a good job! My favorite thing was saying I have the right intentions because as a spiritual person good intent versus bad intent is like the most important thing in the world to me. Its good not just that you recognized me having good intentions but also that good intentions actually matter to you.

The books you collect are worthless right now, but my plan is to make them a currency for unlockables. My plan is to make bonus levels and stuff, but I've been busy and tired lately and haven't worked on this much. All I want right now is to force myself to make the final chapter in the main game.

The idea of there being different worlds and stuff. They will all be brought together in the end, cause all of it will turn out to be Discord's chaos.

Oh and "Tickled Pinkee" is actually my doll's email account. I was using it when I emailed you because my real one wasn't working which is dialgabrite@gmail.com so I usually call myself "Dialga-Brite" just so you know. :)

  4. I doubt there's any rule saying that an anonymous person can't ask questions... is that what you're saying? Do you have a question about my game?

  5. hi, I just noticed the Minor Details link is broken. it shows the correct link but if you click it it takes you somewhere else... any chance this could be fixed? :)

  8. The worst end for a game ever...

I was tricked... i think this game was a creepy pasta, and for what are the book of moon simbols?

    ReplyDelete
  9. worst end? I didn't even make the end yet lol
the final boss will be Discord

the book of moons are worthless now, I plan to have it so you can take them to Twilight Sparkle (cause she's good with books) and she'll get unlockables for you.

    1. Very good so far, but please make a creepypasta of it, otherwise it will be a disappointment.

  10. Difficult. The bit at the beginning with Celestia is funny and I'd like to see the rest of the game but Yoshin Maru is very difficult

    ReplyDelete
  11. Keep trying. Every time I play through it, I usually get killed by one of the Yushins at least once. But theyre beatable, I promise. The Nisshin Maru should be less difficult because even though it fires its LRADs more often, it doesn't have a harpoon. And I know the "big boss" ship should be harder, but I'm simply being canon to the show. :)

  12. Sounds a bit boring but if this is a WinRar-Related download game I am 200 percent screwed...

  13. nope, its a zip file :)

  14. This is not a game. It's reverse anger management.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can't find a good explanitive definition for "reverse anger management" anywhere. But if you're saying that making this game was a way for me to take my anger out, then you're partly right. At least for the Whale Wars bit, I did it because uncompassionate people make me angry. All the other bosses though were strictly for fun. :)

  16. im going to play the game sometime soon (im hoping to show my cosin, caroline) but i cant now cuz i dont want to download stuff right now AND im not even allowed to download without permission from mom but im guessing a pretty fun and unscary game (i LOLed at the thing with yu-gi-oh cards

  17. It can still be scary if it has a happy ending. :)

  18. This sounds pretty awesome, and I look forward to playing it! Thank you for making a nonscary Luna game, dialgabrite.

  20. yw. I really want to finish the final chapter soon, Ive just been so depressed lately and it'd take too much brain power. But I know people seem to love this, and I really don't want to disappoint them.... or myself, cause I really love this game too!

  24. Help in what way? Graphics? Music? Programming the game in general? Id rather keep the resources Ive already used and I prefer to work alone. But still tell me what it is you desire to do, I want to hear you out and have an open mind. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Whoa now that I'm made aware of the enormity of even accomplishing these even simple games. I feel to assist you with what I know and what I'm capable of might just serve to get in your way.

So I guess I can only help in informal ways.
Like providing certain sound effects from video games. And providing certain other benefits that are mostly idiosyncratic.

    I cannot help much.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well I don't think making this game is THAT enormous, as long as I know how to use Multimedia Fusion 2 (what this is created with). The development has been rather easy going and smooth, and therefore fun.

I worked on it and made all these levels so far in only about a month if I remember right. But like I said above Ive been having depression and mood issues that have been preventing me from working on it for a while, even though its easy and fun. Im just DYING to start again, but I have to wait until I feel better.

The reason I prefer to work alone though mostly, is mainly my lack of trust for people, and Id rather not get heavily involved with them. I feel as if having a team would simply slow me down.

Do let me know what kind of video game sounds you have access to, Im interested. If not for using in this game then possibly for others. And please tell me what those "other benefits" are as well.

    :)

  27. A team effort needs to have good communication between members of the team. Just get to know your team members first, and find their strengths, weaknesses, schedule they can work, and find out how well they can work on what they do. I figure if there's a few people working on the same project, they should communicate ideas, and provide feedback to areas that are lacking. After that, you can trust your team to get the jobs done, and work on your own stuff while waiting to get stuff from your team, assuming they have the self-motivation to work on the project.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really would rather not. I can manage just fine on my own, at the times Im actually working on it. I don't even need it really, it'd just serve to stress me more.

If its about getting my own graphics and music made exclusively for the game, I don't care about that. Because I only care whether Im happy with how they look in the game, not where they came from. And I am happy with all the ones I've used so far. If its about programming it, then I don't think I need any help.

    :)

  29. Hmmm...interesting.

I seem to be getting a bug where Luna starts moving to the left or right of her own accord, although sometimes jumping fixes it (or not).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, I know of that bug. Its the ice, its supposed to make her slip. Except sometimes she continues to slip even while jumping and/or after landing on a cloud. It kinda bothers me actually, because it makes her likely to fall off the single clouds.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well how are you screwed then? To my knowledge you don't need winrar to open zip files, or even winzip. Because windows comes with a built in way to extract them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm a huge fan of bizarre/kusoge platformers like Let's Go, Thingio!, and this certainly delivers in that regard. With that in mind, many of the game's flaws are excusable, except for one: the boss fights. I'm stuck on Darkrai ATM. The spammed, aimed projectiles make for unfair and unfun fights. Fix that and you're golden.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Everytime I play through, I usually wind up dying at least once on each of more than one bosses. But chances are you will be able to beat them on your second or third try. Just my opinion, the aimed projectiles make it fun. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey I just want to point out, the reviewer is wrong when they said that Celestia's shots are slower than Luna's. I checked to make sure, and they're both speed 75. Perhaps it is an optical illusion because maybe the fireball's animation is slow?

Oh and I'm starting to work on it again. I've already changed the Apollomon/Dianamon fights, cause I know they're really annoying. The bosses themselves no longer shoot, which leaves just the falling meteors. Of course then it would be too easy, so I had to make them appear faster and more often. But it was the shots from the boss itself, that I thought was the biggest problem there.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shame, up until then the phrase "Luna Game" always had that connotation...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah. Except this game doesnt have a name yet, so Im calling it that for now, since it IS a game where the main character is Luna!

    Final chapter is finished: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElfqFHRZ9aY
Download has been updated with the changes. Enjoy the awesome Discord fights! I hope people like the way I had you fight him four times in a row, and don't see it as repetitive. I made him incrasingly harder each time, with different player pony and also in the last one its not a platform level.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Okay, it's called "Innocent Luna Game" now. If the admins see this, can you please change the title that's listed here? :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. thanks for changing it! that was awful fast... I assume then that admins get email notifications of new comments or something? :)

Also one more favor - can you please fix the Minor Details link thats at the bottom of the review? Its broke. the correct link is displayed but it goes to a completely different place. :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. There. Fixed it for you. And unlike what you think, I actually don't get email notifications for new comments. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I see, I just didnt know you checked this game every day. cause both times you havent failed to respond quickly. Nit like thats not a good thing, Im only curious. Either way, thanks! :)

And so you're another new admin now too?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm definitely playing this! :D I'm a big fan of Luna, but it bothers me that her most famous (if not her only) games are those creepy screamer games. I HATE screamers. >:[ I don't know why people enjoy them/think it's funny when it scares other people. This game looks pretty good. Probably the only one I can play for longer than half an hour before beating. XD

I'll come back after I play it and see if there's any constructive critism I can give. :P

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hmm. None of the links I find anywhere load for me. :( Anypony know where I can find a working link?

    1. the link at the top of the review still works for me... can you tell me what happens when you try it?

And I am glad you like the idea of it!

I have to warn you though... there's some flaws in it and I have seen Let's Play vids of it where people got upset, would rage quit, etc. To me it sorta seemed like they were just sucking at it... but part of me also blames myself and how I made the game. Make sure you read the controls text file... no one ever seems to know its there. Also my friend said that upon beating act one of the Discord chapter (final) that Discord kept flaoting but the game didnt continue or do anything else. It doesnt happen to me though... but let me know if anyone ever has that happen, okay?
      :)

    2. Yeah, I dunno, the discord fight is broken for me too :(

      Delete
    3. In the same way? thats awful, I'm a little displeased to find out its happened to more than one person. Probably is specific to a certain version of windows (which one do you have) or a certain something that multiple computers MIGHT have on them. Just a guess though, I really have no clue, and I dont know what in my programming would make it do it. And since it doesnt happen to me, I cant test for it. :(

    4. I had the same issue with the Discord fight. Sometimes it happened and sometimes it didn't.

      Delete
    5. thanks for giving your experience with that. the game is really broken in a lot of ways though so I'm probably not gonna fix it, and I don't know how anyway. I'm just gonna move on and make newer, hopefully better, games. :)

    1. there are a few parts that reference the creepypasta but they don't include the extreme gorey parts and there's always a happy ending. In fact the whole point of this was to deconstruct the creepypasta specifically and also to make a platform game with Luna that was both innocent and also had real gameplay.... bosses etc.

Also, would you mind telling me what your youtube name is so I can see the LPs if you do them? Mine is Groudon128... :)

  44. Dialgabrite, you said something about adding an upgrade system? Do you have any ideas as to when you will be adding this and what kind of upgrades? I am sure there are others who are also eager to know more about it

    1. my apologies, but that's canceled. The main story is complete but I sadly decided to stop working on this game for the most part.
However there's good news I think you'll like.
This game has a sequel and although the main story isnt finished yet, it already has a ton of bonuses and upgrades and stuff. Its called "Meloetta: Melody of Discord". You play as Meloetta (a pokemon), Hatsune Miku... and most importantly to the people here probably, Pinkie Pie. It also has some bonus levels with different characters. Including a remake of one of the boss battles from this game where you play as Luna. EQG said theyd post it but that was sooo long ago Ive felt like I have to nag them. Probably not their fault though, if theyre busy and stuff. I probably just don't understand the extent of that.
      but here's facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/dialgabrite?ref=tn_tnmn#!/MelodyofDiscord

    2. as far as what kind of upgrades:
      unlockable weapons
      bonus picture gallery
      bonus levels

Meloetta is also a quality improvement over this game by far. And a lot of new features are added.

  45. Yeah... Don't know about the diagonal shooting as Luna. Plus the overall cheery, cheesy atmosphere is making me think about taking this out of my Luna Game series folder, which currently houses all of the original Luna Games, Luna Game 5, Luna Game X and this.

  46. This was decent. I had fun with it, but it did have some major problems. The movement just felt rather clunky and stiff. The jumping was a slight issue as Sapphire Feather pointed out. Desktop ponies are overused at this point. And some of those boss fights were ridiculous. Particularly the ships and the last Discord phase. It's almost impossible to beat the ships without getting hit or falling into the water a bunch of times since you pretty much have to land on the ship itself just to hurt it and the ship moves so fast it's easy for you to fall off. The last Discord fight was nearly infuriating. The only good time to attack him is between his attacks (you pretty much have to run away from him when he does the fire or purple blasts), but the window between his attacks is so short. Because of his random sporadic movements and the very specific direction of your projectiles it was rather hard to line up my shots and hit him. I think this fight would have been a lot better if your character moved a little faster. The other boss fights were fine though. I especially liked the Pokemon fights. It was fun seeing so many cameos from other franchises. And I really liked the music even if a lot of it was just taken from other stuff.

    1. thanks! I have to say I've been hard at making more games lately and because of the platform movement engine I used this game has a lot of problems my other games don't have. I'm glad that cameos and crossovers please you, cause a lot of people get annoyed by this type of thing, but theyre fun for me. If you like pokemon, you should try "Meloetta: Melody of Discord" (its here on eqg). This game has a lot of problems it doesn't have, the ships return but are a lot less broken. Even I have trouble going back and playing those fights in this game, theyre so broken! But in meloetta they work pretty smoothly. There's some changes too. Falling in the water is instant death but the ships move a lot slower. Also the sonic waves don't hurt you, they just confuse you, make it hard to move, and leave you vulnerable to what comes next.
